Response to Literature Essay for English 2 Honors
Spring Semester
Dante’s Inferno Essay

After completing a literature Unit on Dante’s Inferno, students have read and analyzed Dante Alighieri’s The Inferno, introduction and background digital media materials on Dante Alighieri, The Dante’s World website which includes extension activities and materials, and three or more academic articles critiquing Dante’s work.
Topic Options: Please only choose ONE of the following topics
1.  In his poem, The Inferno, does Dante create a place of divine justice and love conveying God’s perfect justice or does Dante create a picture of a cruel God that encourages torture as punishment?
2.  In his poem, The Inferno, Dante presents a ranking of moral failures.  Discuss why sins are ranked accordingly and use evidence from the text to prove or disprove that Dante provides a proper or correct order of sins.
3. Discuss the allegory of Canto I and Dante’s internal struggle in the woods.  Make a personal and/or cultural comparison and a contrast to something relevant in today’s society.
Directions:
Choose one of following three topic options to write about for this essay.
You must include an introduction with a thesis statement where you give a short synopsis of the comedy and a brief background about Dante.
You must include at least two body paragraphs that support your thesis with quotes from The Inferno, the Dante websites, and/or three of the academic articles that you read about The Inferno.
You must also include one body paragraph that gives a counter claim to your thesis statement with quotes from The Inferno, the Dante websites, and/or three of the academic articles that you read about The Inferno.
You must include a conclusion paragraph that goes beyond the thesis statement and makes the reader think about a theme from the poem and how it relates to our modern day world.
Suggestions:
• Avoid summarizing the text. Use the text to argue a specific position.
• Give canto and line references when you cite the poem or refer to passages in the poem. (5.22-47)
• To test and strengthen your claim you must provide a counter argument.
• Do not feel compelled to provide a definitive interpretation of the poem. Provide instead an interesting, analytical, well-grounded exploration of your position on some aspect of the poem.
